STANDARDS FOR PRACTICING MEDIATIONIn most states, there are no legal requirements for those who may practice mediation. Some institutional mediation service providers may, however, have their own specific certification requirements to practice mediation as part of their organization. These organizations may require completion of their own mediation training or they may allow or require outside mediation training. The Center's training has often met the requirements for such outside training, although the matter is often decided on the basis of individual application by the prospective mediator. Our own view is that becoming a good mediator usually entails a process of training, practice and supervision as the perspective, skills and sensitivities necessary to work with people in conflict evolve. The Center's programs are certified for Continuing Legal Education Credit by the respective professional boards of Continuing Legal Education in California, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The specifics are detailed in the description of individual programs. (See New York Training Program, California Training Program.) |
